Roadmap & Expectations

For your thesis I expect you to do a literature review. To know what I mean by that read the article below (~5 pages).

Doing a Literature Review

Still there? Ok here is the plan for the 1st semester. We will plan at least 3 meetings in the first semester. The goal is to finish step 3 before the winter break.

Step 1: IDEATION (1-2 paragraph, 2-3 scientific references)

Write a paragraph that answers the following questions:
- What are you researching? Clearly state your research topic or problem.
- Why is it important? Explain the significance of the problem or gap in understanding that you are addressing.
- What is missing in the existing scientific literature? Highlight the limitations, gap, or puzzle in current scientific research that your study aims to fill.

Step 2: MIND MAP (DAG & 5-10 scientific references)

Build a directed acyclic graph (DAG) where you:
- Identify key concepts relevant to your research topic.
- Link these concepts together by using directional arrows to indicate the direction of the relationship, the sign of the effect (+/-), and strength of these connections based on the literature.
- Support the links with scientific references. You want to identify at least 5 scientific articles and place them on the relevant links in your mind map.

Step 3: PROPOSAL

Write a 2-page research proposal that leverages the mind map & scientific literature.
- You clearly articulate your research question .
- You define your dependent (DV), independent variables (IV).
- You tell how you plan to reduce the uncertainty around this question (methodology)
- You tell upfront what you expect to find in the form of hypotheses, based on what you know today and what you have read.

After that, you should have a better sense on how to convert your proposal into a thesis (that will take the form of a literature review).
