The objective of the Master’s course "Careers in politics" is to train students in the skills expected of an adviser in a ministerial or local authority office, or in those of an assistant to an elected official [local, European or national] or a consultant specialized in political issues [for administrations and professional organizations or public affairs companies]. The course will also enable the students who are interested in research to develop some specialized knowledge that will enable them to approach in an informed manner the elements that structure the activities of elected officials at different levels. They will then be able to carry further the work begun during the Master's course by pursuing a doctorate in the social sciences with the Émile Durkheim Centre.

Objectives

The course is designed to enable students to acquire different types of knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of the issues that an elected official may have to deal with and the ability to put them in perspective.
  • Knowledge of the political, financial and legal constraints that structure the activities of an elected official
  • Knowledge of the articulation between the local, national and European levels of representation
  • Editorial techniques
  • Ability to use statistical tools to develop briefing notes
