Presentation

This class aims to study the main "substantive achievements" of the European Union, i.e. the various policies provided for in the Treaties and implemented by the Union's institutions. Given their number and variety, however, these policies will necessarily be studied selectively.

The first part of the class ("founding policies") will examine the fundamental principles on which the Union's internal market is based, namely the main freedoms of movement and the rules of European competition law.

The second part of the class ("derived policies") will focus on taking stock of certain sectoral policies conducted within the framework of the Union. By way of illustration, the following may be examined more closely: the economic and social cohesion policy, the common agricultural policy, the social policy, the area of freedom, security and justice (AFSJ), the common foreign and security policy (CFSP), or the cooperation with third countries and humanitarian aid.

Recommended Prerequisite(s)

Must have basic knowledge of the institutions of the European Union (the institutional triangle and Court of Justice), its standards (difference between a regulation and a decision) and the distribution of powers between the Union and the Member States.

Form of assessment

The number of ECTS credits and assessment conditions are likely to be different for students in a credit exchange programme.

Students are required to have a minimum level of knowledge, in particular, regarding the internal market rules and the case law of the Court of Justice of the European Union.
