General introduction to economic and social issues specific to Latin America: historical background, settlement and migration, social structures and inequalities, political systems (authoritarianism and democracy, caciquism, conflicts and conflict resolution), modes of regulation and accumulation regimes (with special attention to the latter).
A knowledge of Spanish is useful but not compulsory.
The aim is for students to focus on a particular issue. Students are required to work on the topics covered prior and after class.
