Social systems in the digital age

Descriptif

The aim of this course is to introduce students to contemporary social and ethical issues resulting from the advent of new technologies. Human interaction increasingly occurs in spaces mediated by digital systems. The digitalization of societies creates new opportunities and challenges for a functioning society. For instance, policy makers have started to use algorithms to mobilize voters or determine bail. The use of these technologies raises questions of accountability, ethics, fairness, and transparency. This course engages the social, political, and economic implications of big data, artificial intelligence, large-scale experimentation, and increasing automation in social systems such as democratic societies.
